Static Homes

 

The Static home or static caravan industry contributes a significant amount to the UK leisure industry. Figures collated by national agencies indicate that 20% of all recorded leisure breaks in the UK in 2008 were accounted for by the Parks industry. This compares with 28% of recorded leisure breaks in the Hotel and Guesthouse sector. Of that 20% figure 16 million bed nights can be attributed to Static Home holiday lets and 16.6 million bed nights to Static Home owner stays. Similarly, 3.2 million trips were taken by holidaymakers to Static Homes in the UK and 3.7 million trips were taken by Static Home owners (United Kingdom Tourist Statistics 2008).

 

Within the UK there are approximately 4000 individual static and touring caravan parks. Information on the majority of these sites is contained in industry specific publications such as the "Holiday Parks Guide” published by the "British Holiday & Home Parks Association" (BH&HPA) who are Britain’s largest independent park organisation. They also produce a guide on award winning “eco-friendly” parks in the UK in line with the current trends towards sustainability.

 

Retail prices for a brand new Static Home or Static Caravan start from about £13,000.00 for a starter model to over £50,000.00 for a more luxurious model with an average mid range Static Home retailing at £25,000.00. While many modern units are built to BS3632 standards this is not a requirement and many Static models confirm to the lesser BS EN 1647 standards. BS3622 sets down detailed requirements regarding stability and structural integrity, weather resistance, adequate ventilation, drainage and sanitation, adequate means of escape, satisfactory thermal & sound insulation, the safe installation of electrical services and gas / oil fired installations and windows and doors. BSEN1647 is less rigorous with units built to this lesser standard not designed to be inhabited over the colder winter months.

A Static Home owner on a recognised Static Home site would typically own the Static Home itself but rent the piece of land or pitch from the Static Home Site Owner. Annual rents or pitch fees vary greatly from park to park and are heavily influenced by the amenities provided by the site owner such as recreational Park facilities and site location. Static Home sites vary in size from several units to many hundreds of units. It is important to bear in mind that Quote Desks Static Home Insurance policy would cover the policyholder for annual rental fees or pitch fees if the Static Home was made uninhabitable by an insured event such as fire, storm or flood.

 

Static Home sites are in the main holiday home sites and owners or residents do not fall under the auspices of the "Mobile Home Act" 1973 or the "Housing Act" 2004. The majority of static caravan sites are restricted to certain opening times during the year and while it is not always the case a 365 day occupancy period is uncommon. However, a minority of Static Caravan owners will be able to reside in their Static Home all year or will relocate to other accommodation during the site closure period which may be as little as 2 weeks per year depending on the individual park’s license. A residential Static Home site is legally obliged to have a recognised site licence as required under the "Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act" 1960.
